Fifty years of history echo through the halls of the Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias. It’s 1972. The air crackles with anticipation as the Universidad Central del Ecuador’s newest faculty opens its doors. The Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias begins its life in modest, prefabricated buildings. The determined faculty, led by its founder and first Dean, Dr. Luis Aníbal Riofrío González, builds a strong foundation. They establish a laboratory, a library, and the Institute of Psychological Research, laying the groundwork for future generations of psychologists. The fledgling Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias starts with a single school offering three specializations: Clinical Psychology, Industrial Psychology, and Special Education and Psycho-rehabilitation. Students of Industrial Psychology gain practical experience through partnerships with SECAP, the Ministry of Labor, and private companies like Textil Equinoccial and Hotel Colon. The Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias understands the importance of evolving with the times. The curriculum undergoes four revisions. By 1990, the program extends to six years, culminating in a year of pre-professional practice and research. Fast forward to 2022. The Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Teatro Universitario hosts a ceremony honoring faculty, students, and staff. The Rector of the Universidad Central del Ecuador acknowledges the faculty’s growth. He highlights the increase from zero PhD-holding professors to thirty, showcasing the success of the university’s commitment to scientific advancement. He announces exciting developments: the upcoming Forensic Research Center, a much-needed psychological assistance center, and a doctoral program in psychology in collaboration with the University of Concepción, Chile. The Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias continues to grow. It now offers master’s programs in Integral Inclusion in Disability Situations, Occupational Safety and Health, Neurocognition and Learning, and Legal and Forensic Psychology. The Facultad de Ciencias Psicológias, a testament to its founders’ vision, continues to shape the future of psychology in Ecuador.
