“By knowledge by innovation” This motto greets you at the entrance of the Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa. This isn’t just a building it’s a testament to centuries of pharmaceutical history.

The Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa has a rich past. It began as a humble School of Pharmacy in 1836. This was attached to the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon. It was founded by a visionary named Passos Manoel. The apothecary from São José Hospital played a key role.

Initially the school shared cramped facilities. It was annexed to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. This situation remained until 1918. Then the school finally gained independence. It was renamed the Higher School of Pharmacy. Even then space remained an issue.

In 1920 a solution emerged. Land was purchased at Quinta da Torrinha. This would become the future home of the Faculdade. The location in fact helped shape the city. The University City Campus was later developed around it.

The transformation into a full-fledged Faculty occurred in 1921. It was officially named the Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa. The faculty had the power to grant undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Pharmacy. It also conferred Pharmaceutical Chemist diplomas.

But the journey wasn’t without its bumps. In 1932 budgetary cuts led to its closure. This was a difficult time for the institution. Only the Faculty of Pharmacy in Porto remained. Lisbon’s school became a Higher School again only granting bachelor’s degrees.

This situation lasted until 1968. Then the Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa was restored. It regained its former status along with its Coimbra counterpart. Both institutions resumed granting full pharmacy degrees.

Over the years the Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa evolved. It expanded its curriculum. The undergraduate degree in pharmacy was replaced by a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Bologna Process led to further changes. It introduced a 10-semester integrated master’s degree. The faculty continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing landscape of pharmaceutical sciences.

Today the Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa is a leading institution. It’s known for its excellent teaching research and community outreach. Its impressive buildings stand as a reminder of its dedication to knowledge and innovation. The institution contributes significantly to public health. It has earned both national and international recognition. This reflects its commitment to excellence. It is a vibrant hub for the future of pharmacy in Portugal.
