Ready to witness the unsung heroes of the sky? This is the FAA Control Tower in Chicago. It stands as a silent guardian over one of the world’s busiest airspaces.

The FAA Control Tower is not just a tower. It’s a critical hub where air traffic controllers orchestrate the safe and efficient flow of aircraft. They manage countless takeoffs and landings every day.

O’Hare International Airport has two control towers. The North Air Traffic Control Tower is approximately 225 feet tall to the cab floor. Its cab is 400 square feet. The base building covers 10,000 square feet. More than 200 tons of structural steel fortify the tower. 2,100 cubic yards of concrete make the base solid. The cab is encased in massive glass sheets, each 19 feet long and weighing up to 4,000 pounds. The South Air Traffic Control Tower is 207 feet tall.

These towers are vital to airport operations. They facilitate the movement of aircraft at O’Hare. The towers also ensure safety.

EXP designed the South Air Traffic Control Tower. The design provides a durable solution. It meets the FAA’s operational needs. The Chicago Department of Aviation wanted a sustainable and elegant image. The tower’s simple extruded shaft is a break from traditional designs. It inverts conventional tower plans. Core elements are pushed to the perimeter. This opens the tower’s center. It allows direct access under the cab from junction level rooms. This creates a flexible and elegant design. It can adapt to new technologies.

The South Air Traffic Control Tower employs sustainable strategies. It features an extensive green roof. It also uses geothermal heating and cooling. It is only the third air traffic control tower in the US to achieve LEED Gold.

Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center manages a massive area. It covers approximately 91,000 square miles. This airspace includes parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. In 2024, the Chicago Center handled 2,141,995 aircraft operations.

The Walsh Group was involved in building the towers. Their expertise ensured structural integrity. They met strict FAA requirements.

These towers exemplify modern aviation infrastructure. They embody safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The FAA Control Tower here in Chicago is more than a building. It is a symbol of human ingenuity and dedication to air travel safety.

Next time you’re at O’Hare, remember the skilled professionals working tirelessly in the FAA Control Tower. They keep our skies safe. They connect our world.
