“Nine AM to 5 PM daily” declares the sign at Fa Sheng Buddhist Meditation Temple. That’s the invitation to step into a world of serenity and reflection right here in Seattle. The Fa Sheng Buddhist Meditation Temple’s story is one of faith and perseverance. It is a beacon of peace in the Chinatown International District.
Founded in 1980 by Venerable Hsin-Tien the American Seattle Buddhist Association sought to establish a place for Buddhist practice. This vision led to the creation of Fa Sheng Temple. The temple quickly became a vital part of the community. It offered spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging.
Tragedy struck in 2011 when fire consumed the temple building. But the community’s spirit remained unbroken. Services were only paused temporarily.
In 2013, Fa Sheng Buddhist Meditation Temple services resumed. The community demonstrated its resilience and commitment to its faith. They rebuilt not just a building, but a symbol of hope and renewal.
The current structure at 1007 South Weller St stands as a testament to this resilience. Rolluda Architects designed an 11000 square foot two story temple. It includes a full basement. The basement features a kitchen and a reading room. The main floor and upper level house the prayer rooms.
Traditional Chinese architectural elements are incorporated in the design. The design also includes a pocket park. This enhances the pedestrian experience. The Fa Sheng Buddhist Meditation Temple hopes to become a landmark for Seattle’s Chinatown International District.
The Fa Sheng Buddhist Meditation Temple is more than just a building. It is a community hub. It is a place for meditation and reflection. It is a center for cultural preservation.
