Before us stands the F. Scott Fitzgerald House, a brownstone row house on Summit Avenue in Saint Paul. This is no ordinary house, though. It’s a place where history, literature, and the American Dream intertwine. This particular row house is one of a group designed by William H. Willcox and Clarence H. Johnston Sr. It was deemed a National Historic Landmark in 1971 because of its strong association with the famed author. Fitzgerald’s parents, Edward and Mollie, moved here in 1918. This wasn’t the first time they had called St. Paul home, as Fitzgerald himself was born in the city in 1896. The family had previously lived at another address in the city but returned to Summit Terrace in 1918. In fact, Fitzgerald was a student at Princeton University when his family moved to St. Paul. This charming house was the setting for some of his most iconic literary works. It was here in 1919, in the summer months of July and August, that Fitzgerald rewrote the manuscript for his first novel, *This Side of Paradise*. The novel catapulted Fitzgerald into fame and launched his writing career. He lived there until January 1920, writing short stories. Then, he relocated to New Orleans. Imagine, stepping inside these very walls, feeling the echoes of his words, and sensing the energy of a young, ambitious writer on the verge of greatness. The F. Scott Fitzgerald House might not seem like much at first glance, but its connection to an American literary icon makes it a place of immeasurable value.
