Beneath the watchful gaze of history lies the Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı. This cemetery whispers tales of Ottoman sultans and the humble souls who sought to rest near a revered companion of the Prophet Muhammad. The Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı, also known as the Eyüp Cemetery, isn’t just a burial ground. It’s a tapestry woven with the threads of Ottoman history and the spiritual aspirations of countless individuals. Located in the Eyüp district of Istanbul, the Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı takes its name from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. He was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who died during an Arab siege of Constantinople. His tomb became a sacred site, drawing those who wished their final rest to be near him. The cemetery sprawls between the Golden Horn’s shore and the Karyağdı Slope, reaching towards Edirnekapı. It became a desired resting place for Ottoman elite. Sultans, grand viziers, religious scholars, and military commanders found their final resting place here. Among the notable figures buried here are Mehmed V, the 35th Ottoman sultan, and Fevzi Çakmak, Turkey’s first Chief of the General Staff. The Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı also holds the graves of intellectuals, scientists, artists, and poets. Even the Ottoman executioners found their final rest within the grounds, in a separate section known as the “Executioner Cemetery”. Their headstones remain unmarked to prevent retaliation. The Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı has also witnessed moments of tragedy. In 1994, an Austrian professor was murdered within the cemetery. In 2001, prominent businessman Üzeyir Garih was also found dead near the grave of Fevzi Çakmak. These events cast a shadow over the serene atmosphere. Today, as you wander through the Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı, imagine the lives lived, the empires built, and the faith that brought these souls to this hallowed ground. The stones whisper their stories, inviting you to connect with the rich history that lies buried within the Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı.
