Haven’t you heard? Eyüp Sultan Mahallesi is not just a place. It’s a story etched in time. Let’s journey through its captivating past.

Welcome to Eyüp Sultan Mahallesi in Istanbul a district brimming with history and spiritual significance. It is not just another neighborhood. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from ancient legends Ottoman grandeur and modern life.

Our story begins long ago. This area was known as Kosmidion during the Byzantine era. The name came from a monastery dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. This monastery stood as a beacon of faith and healing. It was established in the fifth century. The location witnessed sieges and skirmishes.

Fast forward to 1453. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror captured Constantinople. He had a quest. He wanted to find the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He died during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in the 7th century.

Legend says that Sheikh Ak Shams al-Din a dervish revealed the tomb’s location. Sultan Mehmed II ordered the construction of a mosque next to it. This marked a new chapter for the area. It was renamed Eyüp Sultan in honor of Abu Ayyub.

Eyüp Sultan quickly became a sacred place. It was a spiritual heart for the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman sultans were traditionally girt with the Sword of Osman here. This was at the Eyüp Mosque upon their accession. Relics were displayed. People believed one stone held the footprint of Prophet Muhammad. Mosques schools and tekkes sprung up. Many Ottoman officials wanted to be buried near Abu Ayyub. The cemetery became one of Istanbul’s most desirable.

During the Industrial Revolution Eyüp Sultan transformed. Factories sprang up along the Golden Horn. The Feshane a fez factory stands as a reminder of this era. Today it is an exhibition center. The area became more working class. Wealthier residents moved elsewhere.

But Eyüp Sultan is resilient. In recent years factories have been closed or cleaned. The area has attracted conservative Muslim families. The Eyüp Sultan Mosque continues to draw visitors. Pilgrims come from all over. A thriving market surrounds the mosque. Prayer mats beads and Islamic books are sold. During Ramadan large tents offer food to break the fast.

Take a ride on the gondola lift. Ascend to the Pierre Loti Café. This offers panoramic views of the Golden Horn. The café is named after the French writer Pierre Loti. He loved Istanbul and wrote novels about it.

Today Eyüp Sultan is a blend of the old and the new. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Its unique character continues to captivate all who visit. Remember Eyüp Sultan is more than just a district. It’s a living testament to Istanbul’s rich and diverse heritage. A place where the past resonates in the present.
