Why is this mosque, the Eyüp Sultan Camii, so important to the Ottoman sultans? Well, the answer lies in a tale of faith, conquest, and a sacred burial. Eyüp Sultan Camii is named after Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a close companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He is believed to have died here during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in the 670s. His tomb, located within the mosque complex, became a site of immense religious significance. Now, imagine the year 1453. Sultan Mehmed II, just a few years after conquering Constantinople, decided to build a mosque here. According to legend, his teacher Akşemseddin had a dream revealing the location of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari’s tomb. The mosque was constructed next to it, solidifying its importance. The mosque you see today is not the original structure. Over the centuries, Eyüp Sultan Camii has undergone several restorations and reconstructions. A major rebuilding took place in the late 18th century under Sultan Selim III, giving it its present Ottoman Baroque style. Notice the intricate details, the engaged columns, the carved leaf and shell shapes, and the beautiful calligraphy. This mosque played a vital role in Ottoman tradition. New sultans would journey along the grand Cülüs Yolu, the Accession Way, to Eyüp Sultan Camii. Here, in a solemn ceremony, they would be girded with the Sword of Osman, symbolizing their ascension to the throne. This act, steeped in history and faith, underlined the significance of Eyüp Sultan Camii for the Ottoman Empire. Even today, the mosque remains a place of pilgrimage for many, a testament to its enduring spiritual and historical legacy.
