Externato Marista de Lisboa has a rich history. The Marist Brothers opened it in 1947. Two brothers, Cirilo and Gabriel, came all the way from Brazil. Their mission was to establish a Marist school here in Lisbon.
Initially, finding a suitable location was a challenge. The first premises were near Jardim da Estrela. This is a well known spot in Lisbon. In 1953, the school relocated. It moved to Rua da Artilharia 1. The school found its new home in a palace. This palace embodies humility, simplicity and modesty. These are key values of the school. Since 1986, Externato Marista de Lisboa has been located here. It is in the parish of S. Domingos de Benfica.
Externato Marista de Lisboa is more than just a school. It is a Catholic institution. The act of teaching here is a shared mission. The school emphasizes community. Caring for our shared home is a daily practice. They educate children spanning preschool through secondary levels. Today, Luís Gonçalves is the director. The school has 190 staff members. It serves around 1,350 students.
Marcelino Champagnat founded the Institute of the Little Brothers of Mary in 1817. He wanted to provide education. It would evangelize children and young people. He particularly wanted to help those in need. He believed that to educate is to love.
