What if courage had a face? Here at the Ewan Williamson Plaque, it does. This plaque on Dalry Road isn’t just a piece of metal; it’s a testament to a man who embodied bravery. The Ewan Williamson Plaque honors a firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice. Ewan Williamson was part of the Green Watch at Tollcross Fire Station. On July 12, 2009, he responded to a fire at the former Balmoral Bar, now Benson’s Bar, right here on Dalry Road. As the flames raged, Ewan and his colleagues fought tirelessly, enabling the rescue of sixteen people, including a baby, from the flats above. Ewan, wearing his breathing apparatus, entered the building to battle the blaze. Tragically, during the operation, a floor collapsed, trapping him inside. Despite activating his distress signal, the noise and chaos of the fire drowned it out. His fellow firefighters, displaying incredible courage themselves, risked their lives searching for him in the thick smoke. They almost reached him, but the collapsing floor forced them back. Ewan, at just 35 years old, lost his life that night. This plaque serves as a constant reminder of his bravery and dedication. His sacrifice prompted a thorough enquiry, leading to vital improvements in communication and procedures within the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service. Ewan’s infectious smile and huge heart are remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues. His loss was a deep blow to the firefighting community. So, as you stand before the Ewan Williamson Plaque, remember the man behind the name. Remember his courage, his sacrifice, and his commitment to protecting his community. His story is etched not just in metal, but in the hearts of those he saved and those who will never forget him.
