Edith Christensen probably didn’t imagine the Evergreen School would grow so much when she founded it in 1963 with just six students. Today, the Evergreen School in Shoreline, Washington, a suburb just north of Seattle, thrives with hundreds of highly capable students from preschool through eighth grade. Evergreen isn’t just a school; it’s a journey. The school’s motto, “Where learning is an exciting journey,” reflects its commitment to fostering curiosity and a love for learning. The campus itself is part of that journey. It’s situated on over four acres, a mix of Pacific Northwest forest, wetlands, and native plants. Recently renovated, the Evergreen School boasts new classrooms, administration buildings, and a state-of-the-art makerspace called the BIG Lab. Imagine a suburban oasis where students can explore their creativity and dive deep into hands-on projects. Over 50 after-school clubs and enrichment classes are available. From fencing and drama to programming and cooking, there’s something for everyone. The chess and math clubs are particularly popular, perhaps a testament to the school’s focus on academics. Evergreen students are no strangers to success. In 2003, their K-3 chess team won the National Elementary Chess Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. They’ve even made their mark on the environment. In 1967, the Evergreen School became the first school in North America to create a certified school habitat, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. They also received a Green Globe Award from King County for their composting and worm bin programs. This commitment to environmental stewardship continues with their work in reviving neighboring wetlands and Meridian Creek. It’s clear that the Evergreen School is more than just a place of learning. It’s a community of bright minds, passionate educators, and a testament to the power of nurturing curiosity and creativity.
