Evergreen Baptist Church in San Francisco has deep roots. It began in 1845. Ten people met in George and Mary Brown’s home. They formed a church with seven members. They named it “The Evergreen Church”.

Early Evergreen was a small rural church. They met once or twice a month for preaching. Alexander Travis affectionately known as Father Travis was the pastor. The church grew. By 1858 it had 74 members. They shared a building with Methodists Presbyterians and Episcopalians.

The Civil War raged. Evergreen continued to grow. In 1864 it had 194 members. In 1870 some members formed a new church. Tragedy struck. Their building burned. They purchased the Union Church Building for $400. A cyclone destroyed it in 1881. A generous donation provided a new location.

Evergreen thrived. In 1893 they founded the Louise Short Baptist Widows’ and Orphans’ Home. This later became The Alabama Baptist Children’s Home. They also started missions that became thriving churches.

The current sanctuary building was completed in 1908. It was designed using the “Dayton Plan”. This allowed them to expand worship space. They continued to grow and build. They added an educational building a mission and a Child Development Center. They even acquired more land.

In 2001 the sanctuary was renovated and rededicated. In 2020 they celebrated their 175th anniversary. Evergreen Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a place of worship community and enduring history in San Francisco. This church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a legacy of faith and service.
