Dreaming of Palermo’s hidden souls brings us to Evaristo Carriego. This Argentine poet captured the essence of Buenos Aires. His words painted vivid pictures of the city’s outskirts. Evaristo Carriego was born in 1883 in Paran. His family later moved to Buenos Aires.

Imagine young Evaristo walking these streets. He observed the everyday lives of ordinary people. He found beauty in the mundane. Carriego transformed the city’s underbelly into art. He frequented literary circles. He met influential figures like Rubén Darío. Evaristo Carriego also engaged with anarchist publications. He contributed poems and stories to “La Protesta.” His work depicted the raw reality of suburban life.

Evaristo Carriego’s poetry explored themes of love loss and the struggles of the working class. His unique style blended realism with touches of romanticism. “Misas herejes” was his first published book in 1908. It showcased his early talent and modernist influences. After his death his remaining poems were released under the title “La canción del barrio”.

Carriego found inspiration in the streets of Palermo. He saw the soul of Buenos Aires in its marginalized communities. His work influenced tango lyrics. Eduardo Rovira composed the instrumental tango “A Evaristo Carriego” in his honor. Osvaldo Pugliese recorded it in 1969.

Sadly Evaristo Carriego’s life was cut short. He died of tuberculosis in 1912 at the age of 29. Despite his short life his legacy lived on. Jorge Luis Borges admired Carriego greatly. Borges wrote about Carriego’s life and work. Borges highlighted Carriego’s impact on Argentine literature.

Carriego’s final resting place is Cementerio de la Chacarita. Even now his poems continue to resonate. They speak of a Buenos Aires both familiar and forgotten. Evaristo Carriego immortalized the city’s heart. He captured its hidden corners in verse. His words remain a testament to the power of observation. They remind us that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places.
