Nestled in the heart of Alfter, the Evangelisches Gemeindezentrum Alfter stands as a testament to community and faith. The Evangelisches Gemeindezentrum Alfter isn’t just a building. It’s a story. A story woven from the threads of history and the dreams of a community. After World War II, the arrival of refugees brought an influx of Protestants to Alfter. Initially, services were held in Bornheim and later in the Catholic youth center behind St. Matthäus Church. The Catholic community generously shared St. Matthäus Church with the Protestants for monthly services from 1986 to 1996. The dream of a dedicated space for the Protestant community began to take shape, championed by individuals like Pastor Adalbert Geduhn. They envisioned a place not just for worship, but for gatherings, for learning, for connection. The Evangelisches Gemeindezentrum Alfter was that dream realized. On September 27, 1994, the cornerstone was laid, a symbolic act that solidified the community’s commitment. The building itself is a unique blend of form and function, designed by architect Frank-Rüdger Hildebrandt. Its circular design creates a sense of unity, while the layout, shaped like a figure-eight, fosters a flow between the sacred space of the church and the community areas. The oval-shaped sanctuary is bathed in natural light filtering through three round windows. Inside, the altar, baptismal font, and wooden cross were crafted by local artist Hans-Peter Rottler, adding a touch of local artistry to the sacred space. Interestingly, the church doesn’t have a bell tower. It was a deliberate decision during the design phase to maintain the integrity of the oval structure. Originally, the architect envisioned freestanding wooden pillars with bells, but the idea was ultimately abandoned. The Evangelisches Gemeindezentrum Alfter opened its doors on March 17, 1996. It quickly became the heart of the Protestant community in Alfter, a place for worship, fellowship, and cultural events. The Evangelisches Gemeindezentrum Alfter is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the power of community, the resilience of faith, and the beauty of shared spaces.
