How about a place where whispers of history meet echoes of faith? You are standing before the Evangelische Simeonkapelle. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Karlsruhe’s rich past. It embodies the enduring spirit of its community.
The Evangelische Simeonkapelle began its life in 1837. Friedrich Eisenlohr, a professor of architecture, designed it in the neogothic style. Regine Reuter, a widow, funded the construction. She used her own money. The chapel was consecrated in 1842. It served as a cemetery chapel.
Seventeen burial vaults lie beneath the Evangelische Simeonkapelle. Karl Weltzien rests here. Stone pillars stand guard on either side of the entrance. They hold praying angel figures.
By 1873, the new main cemetery opened because of space constraints. The Evangelische Simeonkapelle was no longer needed for its original purpose. In 1882, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Karlsruhe adopted the chapel. This congregation formed in 1867. They have maintained the building ever since. In 2012, it officially became known as the Simeonkirche.
The Evangelische Simeonkapelle suffered damage during World War II. It was rebuilt in 1948. The chapel served as a US garrison church. It also opened its doors to several German congregations. The city took ownership in 1953. They granted usage rights back to the Evangelical Lutheran community.
A renovation and modernization took place in 1964. Emil Sutor contributed the altar cross. Restoration work occurred in 2007 and 2008. The turret was repaired in 2007. The roof frame in 2008. Restorer Horst Leyendecker recolored the church. These efforts aimed to restore its original appearance.
Across the street stands the Old Chapel Pub. It takes its name and logo from the Evangelische Simeonkapelle.
However, November 17, 2021 marked a change. The Simeonkapelle was deconsecrated as a worship space.
