Ready to discover a story of resilience and unity? The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde in Mainz holds a special place in the city’s heart. Its origins trace back to a time of religious restrictions.

In the 18th century, Mainz was ruled by a Catholic Archbishop. Protestants lived here but they were not allowed to hold their own church services. Imagine traveling across the Rhine to Wiesbaden-Biebrich every Sunday. They went there to worship.

Everything changed with the arrival of the French Republic. Napoleon Bonaparte reached an agreement with the Pope. Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish services were then allowed throughout France. This also included Mainz.

In 1802, Protestants in Mainz decided to form their own unified church. Lutherans and Reformed Christians joined together. They declared themselves simply “Evangelische”. On May 2nd, 1802, the first Protestant service took place. The Altmünsterkirche became their place of worship. Jeanbon St. André supported the young congregation. He was the Prefect of the Departement Donnersberg and a former Protestant pastor.

During that first service, Napoleon Bonaparte was praised. He was recognized as a benefactor of religious freedom. A Bible verse was shared. It urged people to encourage each other toward love and good deeds. The congregation hoped intolerance would never again find a home in Mainz. This remains a clear mission.

Let’s jump forward to Gonsenheim. The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Gonsenheim experienced growth. The Protestant population increased due to industrial workers and city dwellers moving in. In 1893, the synod of Hessen-Darmstadt decided to create a Protestant parish in Gonsenheim.

Since 1891, people gathered for religious meetings in a private home. Later, they met in the school. The community desired their own church. In 1895, the local government gave them land. The Gustav-Adolf-Verein donated 30,000 Mark. The first Protestant church began construction under Pastor Heinrich Bechtolsheimer. Reinhold Weisse designed the church. He was an architect from Mainz.

The first stone was laid in March 1902. The church was dedicated on October 15th, 1903. The small church features a west tower. It was built in the neogothic style. Max Lüder created new windows in 1952. They depict the birth, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. Johannes Schreiter created windows for the nave in 2002.

The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Gonsenheim focuses on word, baptism, and communion. These are central to their faith. The pulpit, altar, and baptismal font represent these elements. The church’s design connects to the idea of new creation. Imperfections in the floor remind us of the community’s humble beginnings.

The Friedensstraße also saw development. A combined parish and community center was built in 1929. A bungalow extension followed in 1965. It provided a worship space and group rooms.

The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde continues its mission today. It serves as a testament to faith, unity, and the enduring hope for tolerance.
