Did you know the Evangelische Kirche in Drais wasn’t always here? This peaceful church nestled amongst the Mainz landscape has a surprisingly vibrant history. It’s a story of community perseverance and surprising relocation. Imagine the Evangelische Kirche in Drais in its previous life. It wasn’t always in Drais. This very building once stood in Hackenheim near Bad Kreuznach. Built in 1967 in the tradition of Otto Bartning’s emergency churches it was moved to Drais. The long journey to its current location was an epic feat of engineering and community spirit. The 15-meter-high bell tower even made the trip intact.

The Evangelische Kirche in Drais’ story begins much earlier though. Long before this building existed. Protestant settlers first arrived in the region around Napoleon’s time. From 1853 to 1948 the surrounding villages were part of a single evangelical parish. Imagine the small number of Protestants. Around 15 lived in Drais and Finthen before 1955. They were part of the Gonsenheim parish. A challenging time for the small community.

The Evangelische Kirche in Drais finally became a reality in 2003. Before that services were held in a variety of locations. Sometimes in the school hall. Other times in the chapel of a Catholic nursing home. The move of this church was a significant milestone. It symbolized the growing presence of the Evangelical community in Drais.

This wasn’t just a simple move. Local enthusiasm was high. Catholic neighbors even helped with the relocation and construction. They joined forces to complete the new addition in 2005. This included the community room and a beautiful new church window. The three bells were added a year later. They represent Faith Love and Hope.

The Evangelische Kirche in Drais is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith community and resilience. The story of its construction and relocation are a testament to the enduring spirit of its congregation. The Evangelische Kirche in Drais stands as a symbol of perseverance. A reminder that faith can move mountains or even entire churches. It’s a story worth remembering. A story that lives on in the heart of this community.
