Was it truly happenstance that the Evangelische Kirche in Mainz found its prominent location? The Evangelische Kirche stands as a testament to the Protestant community’s rise in Mainz. Let’s delve into the story of this iconic church.

In the 19th century Mainz saw its Protestant population grow significantly. Before 1802 only a few hundred Protestants lived in Mainz. They were merely tolerated citizens. By 1900 over a third of Mainz’s population was Protestant. This growth spurred the need for a larger, more visible place of worship.

As their previous church became too small the expansion of the inner city offered an opportunity. The Mainzer Protestants wanted to showcase their newfound confidence. The construction of the Kaiserstraße provided the perfect stage. This grand boulevard became the site for the new church.

Eduard Kreyssig Mainz’s city architect designed the Evangelische Kirche. The church was planned as a counterweight to the Catholic Mainzer Dom. Its imposing 80-meter-high dome was meant to dominate the cityscape. It would surpass other churches and buildings in the inner city. The Evangelische Kirche’s design drew inspiration from the Italian High Renaissance style.

The construction of the Evangelische Kirche took place from 1896 to 1903. However the church board had already organized an urban planning competition in 1894. Kreyssig’s design was one of the winners. The static calculations were performed by Theodor Landsberg. He was from the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt.

On July 2 1903 the Evangelische Kirche was consecrated. But its story doesn’t end there. During the air raids on Mainz on February 1 1945 the Evangelische Kirche was destroyed.

From 1952 to 1954 Heinrich Otto Vogel oversaw its reconstruction. The rebuilt dome was modeled after the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The interior was redesigned. A separate weekday church was created in the former nave. The central space got a neo-Romanesque chancel wall. Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen designed the glass windows. These windows depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The building was rededicated on October 31.

The Christuskirche is not only a place of worship. It’s also a venue for musical performances. The Bach Choir and Bach Orchestra Mainz regularly perform here since 1954. Diethard Hellmann founded these musical groups at the church. Additionally the university services of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz traditionally take place here at the beginning of each semester.

The Evangelische Kirche also houses significant pipe organs. The main organ was built in 1961 by Förster & Nicolaus Orgelbau. Diethard Hellmann helped design the organ. The choir organ was built in 1954. Helmut Walcha collaborated on its design.

The Evangelische Kirche stands as a symbol of Protestant identity in a historically Catholic city. Its towering dome and Renaissance-inspired design reflect the community’s self-assurance. From its beginnings to its reconstruction the Evangelische Kirche has remained a central landmark in Mainz.
