The imposing structure before you is Evangelical Trinity Church. A testament to faith resilience and the unwavering spirit of a community. It wasn’t always this way.

Evangelical Trinity Church stands as a significant landmark in Chicago’s history. Founded on December 3 1961 by twelve middle-class Black families it quickly became much more than just a place of worship. Its early history is inextricably linked to the American Civil Rights Movement. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr and the rise of Black nationalism deeply impacted the church’s trajectory.

The church’s initial vision focused on integration. This was a bold aim in a deeply segregated city. The desire to create a space for upwardly mobile Black families within a predominantly white denomination was unique. This vision however faced significant challenges. Many Black Chicagoans were hesitant to cross the color lines for fear of reprisal. The church’s aspiration to also include poorer Black members was not immediately fulfilled.

The church faced a crucial moment in its history. Membership dwindled in the early 1970s. Leaders realized they needed to redefine their mission. Reverend Reuben A. Sheares II coined the motto “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian”. This simple yet powerful phrase became a rallying cry. It embodied the church’s commitment to embrace its Black identity and faith simultaneously.

The arrival of Reverend Jeremiah Wright in 1972 marked a new chapter for Evangelical Trinity Church. He championed Black theology. He sought to counter the narratives that presented Christianity as a religion solely for whites. The church’s youth choir played a transformative role under Wright. They infused their worship with gospel music and dramatic performances. This ignited a renewed sense of self-love and pride within the congregation.

However the church’s relationship with its famous pastor became a subject of national attention. During the 2008 presidential campaign excerpts of Reverend Wright’s sermons sparked controversy. Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s ties to the church were scrutinized. Ultimately Obama severed his links to the church in response to the ensuing criticism.

Despite the controversies Evangelical Trinity Church continued its important work. Today it’s renowned for its extensive social programs. It supports the disadvantaged both nationally and internationally. Its legacy extends far beyond its walls. It’s a reminder of the power of faith hope and community in overcoming adversity. It’s a living testament to its motto “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian”.
