Built between 1875 and 1876 St Jacobi Church stands proudly in Bremen Seehausen. This striking neo-Gothic church is a testament to architect Johannes Rippe’s vision. Its red brick exterior is instantly recognizable. The church measures approximately 25 meters long and 16 meters wide. A three-story western tower dominates the skyline. This tower features a unique detail four clocks each facing a different direction. It rises to a height of approximately 45 meters excluding its weather vane.
The church bells are another point of interest. Three bells hang within the tower. They were crafted by the Bremer Glockengießerei Otto foundry in Hemelingen. The bells produce the tones e’ g’ and a’. One of these a’ is especially significant. It dates back to 1876. This is quite remarkable for a church bell. The other two bells are younger postwar additions from the early 1950s.
Step inside and you’ll be enveloped by the beauty of a wooden ceiling. Despite its exterior dimensions the interior feels surprisingly square. The altar is in the northeast corner. This is slightly off from a true east orientation due to building regulations. Three wooden steps raise the altar area. The simple wooden altar sits centrally. Above it hangs a crucifix a generous gift from a neighboring Catholic parish.
The church’s organ is another fascinating feature. Located on the loft it was built in 1962 by Alfred Führer of Wilhelmshaven. It boasts 1522 pipes. Interestingly some parts were salvaged from the previous organ built by Walker and Söhne in 1880/81. The current organ even has a name Emma.
Since 1980 St Jacobi Church has been recognized as a listed monument. It stands as a symbol of the community’s faith and perseverance. A wooden plaque inside commemorates those who died during the Second World War. The names of the fallen Seehausen residents are etched onto it a permanent tribute.
