Construction began on February 26 2011. It finished on December 22 2016. The project was a collaboration. Turkish firm Yapı Merkezi partnered with South Korea’s SK E&C. International financial institutions provided substantial funding. This includes the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank. The tunnel’s design had to withstand earthquakes. It can even serve as a shelter in emergencies. The official opening ceremony was a grand affair. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and other dignitaries attended.

The Eurasia Tunnel wasn’t just built. It was engineered with precision. A giant tunnel boring machine a TBM excavated the undersea section. This TBM was a marvel of modern engineering. It handled challenging geological conditions including 28 dyke zones. The tunnel’s lining is 60 centimeters thick. It ensures the tunnel’s longevity. These improvements include new underpasses overpasses and lane widenings.
