Where did Karlsruhe’s grand Via Triumphalis end? Right here at the Ettlinger Tor.

This wasn’t just any city gate. Oh no. The Ettlinger Tor was one of six original gates in Karlsruhe. It held a special place in the city’s history. Built in 1803 it was commissioned by Markgraf Karl Friedrich of Baden. He wanted to celebrate his elevation to Prince Elector. He also wanted to commemorate the conquest of Palatinate territories.

Imagine the scene. The Ettlinger Tor was designed to resemble the entrance of a Greek temple. Its columns were in the Doric style. Each side boasted a guardhouse for the gatekeepers. The street that ended here was the Via Triumphalis. This magnificent boulevard stretched all the way from Karlsruhe Palace to this very spot.

But time marches on. By 1872 the Ettlinger Tor was in bad shape. Repairing it wasn’t cost effective. The area around the gate needed expansion. So sadly it was demolished.

Today the site is bustling. The Badisches Staatstheater and the ECE shopping mall stand proudly here. A sculpture by Andreas Helmling once stood here too. It recreated the original gate. But it was moved during the Karl-Friedrich-Strasse underpass project. It now stands at the Ettlinger Allee motorway interchange.

So next time you stroll by the Ettlinger Tor remember its story. Remember the grand Via Triumphalis. Remember the original gate. Remember the past lives of this vibrant location. You are now standing where history and modernity intertwine.
