Ever wondered how a place could be both a sanctuary and a luxurious escape? Here at the Estero San Francisco in León, Nicaragua, we are right next to the Church of San Francisco. This is not just any church. It is one of the city’s oldest and most significant sites.

Founded in 1639 by Friar Pedro de Zúñiga, the Church of San Francisco has witnessed centuries of León’s history. Imagine this sacred space as the origin of Nicaragua’s vibrant “La Purísima” celebration. It is a tradition of praising the Virgin Mary. The Franciscans started this custom here. Since 1742, it has deeply rooted itself in the nation’s heart.

Today, La Gritería is Nicaragua’s largest religious event. Every December 7th, people celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary. This tradition is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Church of San Francisco.

But there’s more to the Estero San Francisco. Adjacent to the church stands a remarkable hotel. It is a place where history and luxury intertwine. This building was once the Convento de San Francisco. It was León’s first and oldest convent. It shares a rich history with the church.

After religious orders were expelled in 1830, the convent transformed. It housed educational institutions. The Escuela Lancasteriana was the first school here in 1854. Later, it became the Instituto Azarías H Pallais. Sadly, the building was demolished in 1972. Bombings in the 1980s further erased its original structure.

In 1995, a new vision emerged. The Hotel El Convento began construction. Its design honored the colonial architecture of the former Convento de San Francisco. It also incorporated modern amenities. Today, the Hotel El Convento is a premier boutique hotel in Nicaragua. It enchants visitors with its decor and colonial garden.

Notice the sculpture in the church’s atrium. It’s called “Paz, hermano lobo” which translates to “Peace, brother wolf”. Created by Maruca César de Gómez, it depicts a profound scene from Rubén Darío’s poem, “Los Motivos del Lobo.” The poem’s text is inscribed on the base. It celebrates Saint Francis of Assisi.

The Church of San Francisco also honors San Benito de Palermo. This saint is deeply revered by the Leonese faithful. Since 1924, masses have been held in his honor. Every Holy Monday, a procession carries his image through León’s streets. The Franciscans promoted this devotion within the church.

During the celebrations, people give away chicha de maíz. This corn drink symbolizes faith among believers. Many devotees dress in white tunics. They carry candles to light their path.

The Estero San Francisco invites you to delve into León’s spiritual and architectural heritage. The Church of San Francisco and the Hotel El Convento stand as testaments to León’s layered history. This area is a blend of reverence, art, and hospitality.
