A modern marvel in Latin America at the time it hosted a Los Nocheros concert for its inauguration. Even then incomplete it was already deemed one of the most modern stadiums in the region.

The idea began way back in 1947 when Governor Domingo Mercante envisioned a grand sports complex. Years of planning and numerous revisions followed. Finally in 1993 architect Roberto Ferreira’s design was chosen. Construction started in 1997. Economic and labor issues caused delays. The stadium finally opened its doors.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing. There was even a dispute between Estudiantes de La Plata and the local government. This led to a temporary closure and further renovations between 2009 and 2011. But through it all the Estadio Único stood strong. It reopened on February 17 2011. This time fully equipped with a roof covering all seats. Estudiantes de La Plata played Deportes Tolima in its first match after the renovation.
The Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona has witnessed history. It hosted Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores finals. It served as a primary venue for the 2011 Copa América. Rugby Championship matches were also played here. The 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup semifinals third-place match and final took place here.
