Have you ever seen a soccer stadium where one of the stands is the Rio de la Plata? Welcome to the Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe. This isn’t just any stadium. It’s a unique place steeped in history and boasting a breathtaking view. The Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe in Montevideo Uruguay stands proudly overlooking the bay. It’s a true gem of Uruguayan football.

Originally known as Parque Nelson this stadium opened its gates on December 30 1923. Its first official match was against Charley a significant moment in its early days. It then underwent renovations and reopened on August 6 1966 with a game between Rampla Juniors and Peñarol. The name changed again in 1980. It was renamed Estadio Olímpico in honor of Captain Tsakos a Rampla Juniors honorary member. He suggested the name after the legendary Greek mountain.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 2019 a momentous decision was made. The stadium received its current name Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe. This was a tribute to Pedro Arispe a legendary player. He captained Rampla Juniors in the 1920s and 1930s. He also led the Uruguayan national team to victory in the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games. His leadership during the 1927 Uruguayan championship victory for Rampla Juniors a record-breaking season added to his legendary status.

The Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe is particularly picturesque. Two of its sides lack stands. A wall separates the playing field from the Rio de la Plata. Imagine a match day. The roar of the crowd. A perfectly struck ball sails through the air. It flies over the wall and splashes into the river a spectacular albeit slightly inconvenient ending to the play. This unique feature has earned the Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe recognition. It was ranked seventh among South America’s must-see stadiums by Impedimento.org. The website praised its beautiful view of Montevideo Bay calling it a folkloric postcard of Uruguayan football. It’s considered the second most unforgettable stadium in Uruguay after the Gran Parque Central.

Rampla Juniors still uses this historic stadium for its Segunda División Uruguaya matches. There have been proposals to build a third stand behind the goal. This would leave only the river side without seating. However these plans haven’t materialized. A popular saying claims that the fourth stand is the Rio de la Plata itself.

So here we are. Before this incredible stadium. A testament to football’s enduring spirit. A place where history and breathtaking views converge. It is a symbol of Uruguayan football’s rich legacy. The Estadio Olímpico Pedro Arispe deserves a place on everyone’s bucket list.
