Welcome to Estadio Engenheiro Carlos Salema. Home to Clube Oriental de Lisboa since its inception in 1949. This stadium isn’t just a place to watch football. It’s a living testament to the club’s history. Its story is etched into every brick and every blade of grass.
Built in 1949 it was originally named in honor of Engineer Carlos Salema. He was the director of the “Match Factory”. The stadium’s early days were humble. It underwent several renovations. This was to meet the requirements of playing in the first division. Imagine the excitement when changes were announced on November 27 1950.
The club’s ambition soared. They even dreamt of Estadio da Madre de Deus. This was to be a 33000-seat stadium. A magnificent arena for multiple sports. But the ambitious plans never fully materialized. The dream of Estadio da Madre de Deus faded. The focus remained on the beloved Estadio Engenheiro Carlos Salema.
The 1950s saw further growth and improvements. The playing field was rotated 90 degrees. A state-of-the-art grandstand was built. Imagine the pride when in January 1954 the stadium boasted features rivaling Portugal’s best. It had a roofed grandstand and private boxes.
Tragedy struck in 1977. More than 20 years after its construction the grandstand collapsed. Fortunately this was a day after a game. Water infiltration was suspected. This caused a supporting pillar to give way. The stadium was rebuilt from the ashes. It reopened in September 1991. The current configuration holds 4000 spectators. Its history continues to be written on this very ground.
