Designed by engineer Modesto C. Rolland, the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes stands as a testament to Mexico City’s rich sports history. It began its construction in 1944. It was part of Neguib Simón’s ambitious Ciudad de los Deportes project.

Originally known as Estadio Olímpico de la Ciudad de los Deportes, it opened on October 6, 1946. The opening game was an American football match. The Pumas of UNAM defeated the Aguiluchos of the Heroico Colegio Militar 45-0. Imagine the roar of the crowd. Forty-five thousand fans witnessed the historic event.

The Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes quickly became a significant venue. In 1949, it hosted the Copa NAFC. This was the first international soccer tournament held in Mexico. The Mexican national team won all four of their matches. They secured a spot in the 1950 World Cup.

Many notable football clubs have called Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes home. These include Club América, Atlante, Necaxa and Cruz Azul. From 1996 to 2018, it was known as Estadio Azul. This was during Cruz Azul’s tenure.

The stadium’s history is filled with interesting moments. In 1947, the Veracruz team defeated Racing Club. It was the first soccer game at the stadium. Over 45000 fans attended. Miguel Ángel Segura scored the first official league goal there. He scored three goals that afternoon.

The Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes faced challenges. In 1958, it was temporarily closed due to a tax dispute. The lack of parking spaces was the cause. Several teams relocated to Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

The stadium experienced a revival in 1966. The Pumas of UNAM moved there. This was during renovations at their home stadium. In 1970, Club América, Atlante and Necaxa also returned briefly. They played there while Estadio Azteca prepared for the 1970 World Cup.

The Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes has undergone several renovations. These upgrades ensured safety and comfort for the fans. It has two professional football locker rooms. It also features a press conference room for 50 people.

Despite plans for demolition in 2018, the stadium was saved. In 2020, Atlante returned. They made it their home after 13 years in Cancún. Cruz Azul and Club América also returned temporarily. This was because of renovations at Estadio Azteca.

The Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes has hosted numerous finals. These include Copa México and Campeón de Campeones matches. It was the venue for the 1983 CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
