Estadio de Chacarita Juniors first opened its gates on July 8 1945. A friendly match against Uruguayan club River Plate marked the occasion. The local team Chacarita Juniors won 1-0 a triumphant start for their new home. This wasn’t the first stadium for Chacarita Juniors though. Their initial home was in Villa Crespo. They played their first match there in April 1925. That stadium held 35000 people quite a difference from today’s capacity.
The journey to this current stadium was a long and complicated one. Chacarita Juniors were evicted from their Villa Crespo home in 1943. The land was acquired by a company. The club had to find a new location. They chose a site in General San Martin Partido just 8 km from Buenos Aires. They built the stadium in less than six months a testament to their determination.
The years passed and the stadium began to show its age. By 2005 it no longer met minimum safety standards. The club made a difficult decision. They closed the stadium. They demolished the old grandstands. They embarked on a major rebuilding project that lasted until 2011. The reopening was a massive event. Daniel Scioli the Governor of Buenos Aires Province even attended. He cut the ribbon in front of the Isaac Lopez stand a tribute to the club’s legendary goalkeeper.
The rebuilt Estadio de Chacarita Juniors holds 13600 spectators. Plans are in place to expand its capacity even further. Imagine the roar of the crowd during a crucial match.
