An arrow pierced his eye. Estacio de Sa’s life ended in 1567. But his legacy lives on. Here we stand before the very place his story began.

Estacio de Sa was more than a Portuguese soldier. He was the founder of Rio de Janeiro. His arrival marked the beginning of a new era. A battle against French colonists and their indigenous allies shaped the city’s destiny. He fought bravely to claim this land for Portugal.

Estacio arrived in Brazil in 1564. His mission was clear: expel the French from Guanabara Bay. He faced numerous challenges. The French were entrenched. They had the support of local indigenous groups. Estacio’s initial attempts to conquer the bay were unsuccessful. He did manage to capture Forte Coligny on Ilha de Serigipe in 1560. However setbacks forced a retreat. The French reoccupied the fort. Undeterred Estacio returned to Portugal. He secured reinforcements. He then returned to Brazil.

In 1565 aided by Jesuits like Manuel da Nobrega and Jose de Anchieta Estacio launched a decisive attack. He successfully drove the French from their settlement known as France Antarctique. This paved the way for the founding of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro on March 1 1565.

Estacio actively shaped the city’s early years. He served as captain-general. He appointed judges and officials. He distributed land for agriculture. His tireless efforts to establish Portuguese rule faced continuous resistance from the French and their indigenous allies. His death was a tragic end. Yet his bravery secured Portugal’s claim on Rio de Janeiro.

Estacio’s legacy extends far beyond the battlefield. Many places in Brazil bear his name. The Estacio neighborhood. The Estacio de Sa samba school. Even Estacio de Sa University is a testament to his enduring influence. He is a true hero of Rio de Janeiro. A monument stands here near the Sugarloaf Mountain to honour his bravery. A reminder that history is made one courageous step at a time.
