Gazing at Estação Ferroviária General Dutra, imagine the hustle and bustle of a bygone era. Estação Ferroviária General Dutra wasn’t always here. Originally, trains departed from the old Maruí station. In 1930, after three years of construction, Estação Ferroviária General Dutra opened its doors. This was the culmination of an agreement between the Leopoldina Railway and the State of Rio de Janeiro. The station stands on reclaimed land, jutting out into the sea by the Cais de São Lourenço. The Leopoldina line extended from Maruí, curving around the bay to reach the newly constructed Estação Ferroviária General Dutra. It replaced the older Maruí station. This station served Niterói, a city across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. The station building itself was a simple yet functional design, built to handle the increasing passenger traffic. Imagine the steam trains chugging into the station, their whistles echoing across the water. Picture the passengers, dressed in the fashion of the 1930s, eagerly awaiting their arrival or departure. Estação Ferroviária General Dutra played a vital role in connecting Niterói with other parts of Rio de Janeiro state. It became a hub of activity, facilitating trade, commerce, and personal travel. Today, Estação Ferroviária General Dutra stands as a reminder of Niterói’s rich railway history.
