Welcome to Esplanade Nelson Mandela in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement. This expansive green space is more than just a pretty park. The project included the redevelopment of the Orange campus and the restructuring of Rue Flandin.
The northern part of the Esplanade opened in December 2023. It features a sports park. There is also a wooden terrace and a wide pedestrian area. This area was created from land made public as a result of the Orange campus development.
But this is just the beginning. The southern section of the Esplanade Nelson Mandela is currently undergoing transformation. This second phase aims to create an even larger urban park. It will cover 4.4 hectares. The total cost of this impressive project is a significant 6.3 million euros.
The new section will be divided into six distinct areas. A central space features a misting zone. It also has those 27 peace trees mentioned earlier. There will be a large central meadow perfect for relaxation. An expanded playground will include trampolines and a children’s bike path. A promenade will wind through the park offering picnic tables and seating areas. The northern tip maintains its existing sports park. This includes ping-pong tables and a skatepark. Finally a unique open-air creche will cater to 30 children. It is located in a new area called Square Alban-Vitsel.
