Floating serenely next to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos the Espelho de Água reflects the Tagus River’s shimmering expanse. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to Lisbon’s rich history and architectural ingenuity.

Originally built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition the Espelho de Água served as a café and restaurant. Its initial design by António Lino under Cottinelli Telmo’s guidance featured two rectangular buildings linked by an entrance pavilion. The structure was ephemeral. Temporary coverings of metallic arches and zinc sheets sheltered visitors.

Later the building underwent significant alterations. These changes unfortunately obscured its original size proportions and interior simplicity. Fortunately a recent restoration project has breathed new life into the Espelho de Água.

Architects Duarte Caldas and Victor Vicente masterfully restored the building’s original character. They removed superfluous features and demolished non-original structures. The original decorative geometry now shines. A square lattice graces the entrance façade. Circular features on the side facades are elegantly illuminated at night.

Inside the Espelho de Água minimalism reigns. Concrete floors and white surfaces create a clean aesthetic. Furnishings have a distinct Scandinavian vibe. Slim linear lighting complements the restored roof framework. Circular ceiling features with concealed lighting in the restaurant mirror those outside.

The Espelho de Água welcomes visitors into a large space. It serves as an exhibition space and music venue. Beyond lies the cafeteria and restaurant. A concrete oblong bar sits in the middle highlighted by a skylight above. This skylight is a subtle nod to the open-air patio that once separated the original structures.

A lush vertical garden engulfs the kitchen. It adds a vibrant splash of colour and texture. Amazingly during renovations a 1990 mural by Sol Lewitt was discovered and restored. It now graces the restaurant adding even more colour.

The Espelho de Água also boasts a deck. It offers retractable fabric shading and breathtaking river views. There is a leisure area and a shop on the north side. Office areas occupy the first floor. The main entrance showcases a new mosaic by Angolan artist Yonamine. It blends urban art and African culture celebrating Portugal’s multiculturalism. Its whimsical geometry perfectly complements the entrance façade’s austere square lattice and the sculptural spheres from the 1940s. The Espelho de Água stands as a vibrant symbol of Lisbon’s past present and future. A stunning blend of history art and modern design.
