In 2008, a space was born. This space is a tribute to a musical genius: the Espaço Tom Jobim.
Antônio Carlos Jobim, born in 1927, was more than a composer. He was a conductor and a maestro. Jobim poured his love for Rio’s Jardim Botânico into his texts and songs. Now, the Espaço Tom Jobim stands in his honor.
The Espaço Tom Jobim comprises three key areas. First, there is the Teatro Tom Jobim. Then there is the Galpão das Artes. Finally, we have the Casa do Acervo. Each area offers a unique glimpse into Jobim’s world and Brazilian culture.
The Teatro Tom Jobim is a cultural hub. It seats 378 people. Here, you can experience song, dance and theater. The theater also hosts conferences and symposiums. In 2013, Época magazine named it the city’s best theater.
Next is the Galpão das Artes. This space hosts smaller shows. It also has a 324 square meter exhibition area.
Finally, there is the Casa do Acervo. This is where Tom Jobim’s complete archives reside. You can explore a permanent exhibition. It features pictures and original scores. Personal effects and videos from Jobim’s shows are also on display.
Jobim’s connection to the Jardim Botânico was profound. He found inspiration here. In 1995, a wooden monument with a bronze plaque was dedicated to him. IBAMA, the Brazilian environment institute, created it. The monument stands as a reminder of Jobim’s love for nature.
Tom Jobim’s life was full of music. He learned guitar and piano. His stepfather encouraged his piano studies. He studied with German composer Hans-Joachim Koellreuter. Jobim began his career playing piano in Copacabana nightclubs. His first hit was “Teresa da Praia” in 1954. He wrote it with Billy Blanco.
In 1956, Jobim composed for the play “Orfeu da Conceição”. Vinicius de Moraes wrote the play. Some of Jobim’s songs were included on Elizeth Cardoso’s album. The album is called “Canção do Amor Demais”. It is considered the beginning of bossa nova.
Tom Jobim passed away in New York in 1994. He suffered cardiac arrest after bladder surgery. In 1996, he posthumously won a Grammy Award. It was for best Latin jazz performance on his album “Antônio Brasileiro”.
