Imagine classrooms once echoing with the chilling directives of Argentina’s last dictatorship. Now they resonate with art and creation. This transformation embodies the spirit of Espacio Cultural Nuestros Hijos.
Espacio Cultural Nuestros Hijos stands as a testament to resilience. It symbolizes hope amidst a painful past. This cultural space is located on Avenida del Libertador. It occupies the grounds of the former ESMA. ESMA was the Navy Petty-Officers School. It was also the largest clandestine detention center during the dictatorship. More than 5000 detainees disappeared here.
In 2008, the Madres de Plaza de Mayo founded Espacio Cultural Nuestros Hijos. They sought to transform a place of horror into one of learning, beauty, and art. Their goal was to create a space accessible to all. It would embody the dreams of their children.
The history of this place is complex. The school was founded in 1924. It offered technical careers like electronics and naval mechanics. During the dictatorship, part of the ESMA became a clandestine detention center. Here, unspeakable acts occurred.
In 2004, President Néstor Kirchner ordered the removal of portraits of dictators from the Military College. He then established a Memory Museum at the site. The Madres requested the former Naval Lyceum building for their cultural space.
The opening of Espacio Cultural Nuestros Hijos was a powerful event. On January 31, 2008, a multitude joined the Madres. They painted colorful flowers and suns on the walls. This symbolized the Madres’ mission. They wanted to convert a site of horror into a space for art.
