A melody drifts on the breeze. It’s the Escuela Superior de Música. Its walls whisper tales of musical genius. This isn’t just a school. It’s a cradle of Mexican musical talent.

The Escuela Superior de Música stands proudly. It’s a testament to the passion and dedication of countless musicians. It all began in 1936. A presidential decree formalized its founding. Teachers and students from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música yearned for a different approach to musical education. Their vision took flight.

The school’s initial purpose was clear. To train professional musicians. The curriculum was strong. It covered composition instrumental and vocal performance in concert and jazz music. Twenty specialties were offered. Three levels of study Basic Medium Superior and Superior were provided. These levels provided a solid academic foundation for aspiring musicians.

Initially the Escuela Superior de Música operated at night. It was housed within the Conservatorio Nacional de Música. It was known as the Escuela Nocturna de Música para Trabajadores y Empleados. It was open only to working individuals. This was a deliberate attempt to make musical education accessible to those who might not otherwise have had access.

But the school’s popularity soared. It quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. In the 1940s it became an important institution. It gained independence from the Conservatorio. It found a home with the newly established Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura in 1946. The Escuela Superior de Música continued to evolve.

Over the years the Escuela Superior de Música moved several times. It settled in Coyoacán at Fernández Leal 31. In 1980 it gained the academic status of a university. A Jazz degree was added in 1998. The school expanded its offerings to include a wider range of musical styles.

The Escuela Superior de Música is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where melodies are born. It is a beacon of musical excellence. Its legacy continues to enrich Mexican culture. The music from this building still echoes. It touches hearts across Mexico. The Escuela Superior de Música is a testament to the transformative power of music.
