Why does the motto “E scientia hominis salus” resonate so deeply here at the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL? It means “From science, the salvation of man”. This isn’t just a saying. It is the driving force behind everything this great institution stands for.

The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL is a public university in Quito Ecuador. It is known as EPN. The campus covers 15.2 hectares. That is about 38 acres. The built area is around 62000 square meters.

Founded in 1869 the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL aimed to be Ecuador’s first technical center. From its start it focused on applied science and engineering. Laboratory instruction is key here. The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL embraced the polytechnic university model early on.

Gabriel Garcia Moreno the former Ecuadorian President founded the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL. He wanted a center for scientific and technological advancement. To achieve this Garcia Moreno hired German Jesuit scientists. They managed both the university and the Quito Astronomical Observatory.

Notable figures like Juan Bautista Menten and Theodor Wolf shaped the EPN. Menten served as the first director. Wolf excelled in cartography and mineralogy. These early academics established the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL as a research hub.

The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL faced closure in 1876 but was reopened in 1935. Its name was officially changed to ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL in 1946. In 1964 the university relocated to its current campus in El Giron. It was named after Rector José Rubén Orellana Ricaurte.

The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL offers diverse degrees in science and engineering. Civil electric petroleum and computer science engineering are among them. The Technical Training School was founded in 1967. It expanded the offerings into technical degrees.

Today the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL has many faculties. They cover administrative sciences chemical engineering and computer science. There are eight faculties. They house 24 undergraduate schools. Eighteen master’s degrees are offered here plus six postgraduate doctorates.

The Technical Training School ESFOT focuses on computer networking. It teaches computer programming. ESFOT shows how computers exchange data.

The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL plays a vital role in monitoring Ecuador’s volcanoes. The department monitors volcanic activity in the Andes. Cotopaxi is watched closely. It is a stratovolcano south of Quito. The ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL keeps a close eye on Sangay and Reventador volcanoes. The school helps keep citizens informed.

The Gustavo Orcés V. Natural History Museum is on the campus of the ESCUELA POLITECNICA NACIONAL. It conducts research on Ecuadorian fauna. It contributes to the country’s environmental awareness. The museum houses the remains of a complete mammoth. It was found in Ecuador.
