Built on a challenging slope Escuela 384 stands as a testament to community collaboration. This public school in Montevideo’s Barrio Sarandí Nuevo is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of social integration and upward mobility. President Pepe Mujica envisioned a new urban area. He wanted to transform a vacant nine-hectare plot near Avenida Batlle Berres and Camino de las Tropas. This area was a place of hope for many. The Plan Juntos initiative and mutual-aid housing cooperatives built 440 homes. Escuela 384 became a crucial part of this development.

The architects faced a unique design challenge. They had a small steeply sloped site. Their solution was ingenious. Public areas like the multipurpose hall and administration are on the ground floor. They face the neighborhood and a nearby kindergarten. The multipurpose hall has two entrances. One is from the school’s hall. The other opens directly to a plaza. This dual access encourages community use.

The upper floor houses most classrooms. This level is designed like a fold. It shields the building from south winds and the noise of Camino de las Tropas. It maximizes northern sunlight and provides a view of the neighborhood. A central garden connects both levels. It features a staircase and a slide. This design mirrors the original landscape before construction. The garden brings nature into the heart of the school.

The building’s construction is simple yet effective. Public schools demand durability and affordability. The structure uses reinforced concrete. Classroom partitions are either exposed concrete blocks or soundproofed panels. These panels could be removed later if educational needs change. The interior facades are a colorful mix of aluminum and glass. The building stands as one of the most economically constructed schools in recent years.

Escuela 384 has won notable recognition. It was even nominated for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize. It also received recognition at the 2016 Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism. The school is a point of pride. This public school shows that even with limited resources. A beautiful functional and impactful educational facility can be created. It demonstrates what’s possible when vision community involvement and architectural ingenuity come together. More than just a school Escuela 384 is a community hub. It represents hope for the future in a vibrant neighborhood. It’s a place where children learn and dreams take flight.
