On a sunny Montevideo morning in 2024, Escuela 289 in the Colón neighborhood celebrated a momentous occasion. The air buzzed with excitement. A new chapter began for the 165 students who call Escuela 289 their second home. This wasn’t just any school day. It was the inauguration of a brand-new building. The children, teachers, and families gathered for the official opening of the newly constructed Escuela 289. Located at César Mayo Gutiérrez 2189, the two-story structure stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity. The modern facility boasts six bright classrooms, a spacious dining hall, and a well-equipped kitchen. Outdoor spaces provide ample room for play and learning. The school was thoughtfully designed with universal accessibility in mind, adhering to the UNIT 200 standard. The project, a public-private partnership (PPP), represented a substantial investment of over 1.5 million dollars. More than just bricks and mortar, the new Escuela 289 embodies the community’s commitment to education. It’s a place where students are nurtured and empowered to reach their full potential. The dedicated team includes a principal, six teachers, specialist instructors for English and physical education, and six auxiliary staff members who keep everything running smoothly. They ensure the students are well-fed, the building is clean, and the learning environment is optimal. ANEP President Virginia Cáceres noted the school’s alignment with the ideal role of educational centers within their communities. She emphasized the importance of public schools as vital neighborhood hubs, extending beyond the classroom. The transition to a full-time schedule in 2024 further strengthens Escuela 289’s impact. This shift allows students to spend more time immersed in learning, fostering stronger peer relationships, and benefiting from a richer pedagogical experience. Olga de Las Heras, Director General of Initial and Primary Education (DGEIP), reflected on the school’s journey. She recounted how Escuela 289 emerged from a community need, a testament to the power of collective effort. As a symbol of growth and renewal, a tree was planted and a commemorative plaque unveiled during the ceremony. Just a few months later, in August, Escuela 289, still situated on Camino Carlos A. López, hosted a memorable movie day. Organized by the school and Municipio G, the event welcomed around 100 enthusiastic students. Laughter filled the air as students from different grades enjoyed animated and pop films. This event, along with the new building, illustrates the dynamic spirit of Escuela 289. It is a place of learning, growth, and community engagement.
