“Did that little school really get an award?” a passerby might wonder, looking at the Escuela 249. You might not guess it from its unassuming exterior, but this school, officially called Escuela N° 249 Hederson Cardozo, holds a special place in the heart of the community. It stands as a testament to the tireless efforts of a man named Hederson Cardozo, a construction worker and dedicated community leader. He deeply believed that every child deserved access to education, even though he himself had an interrupted education. Hederson Cardozo dreamt of a school right here in the Covisunca neighborhood. He actively campaigned for a school and kindergarten for the children of this community. He served on committees, rallied support, and never backed down from his vision. Even when the initial plans proposed a smaller school, Cardozo fought to ensure the community received what was promised. Sadly, Cardozo didn’t live to see the school’s completion, passing away in 2010. However, his legacy lives on in every child who walks through the doors of Escuela 249, a beacon of hope and learning, a testament to the power of one man’s unwavering belief in the importance of education.
