The school carries the name of José Belloni. He was a significant figure in Uruguayan art. Belloni was born in Montevideo in 1882. His childhood home now houses the Argentinian embassy. At age eight he moved to Switzerland. There he attended primary and secondary school.

Belloni’s father was a Swiss immigrant and gardener. José studied drawing in Lugano Switzerland. He then received a scholarship to further his education in Europe. In 1908 Belloni returned to Uruguay. He joined the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

José Belloni is remembered for his sculptures. Some of his famous works include “El Entrevero” and “La Carreta”. “La Carreta” can be found in Parque Batlle. Another sculpture “La Diligencia” is located in El Prado. Belloni died in Montevideo in 1965.

Escuela 107 José Belloni has a special connection to the artist. Belloni attended this very school for almost two years. The school proudly displays a sculpture. It’s a mold of Rodó’s “El Ariel”. Belloni himself donated it.

The school operates from Monday to Friday. The hours are 7:00 to 18:00. It’s closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Escuela 107 provides education to many students.
