“The founding of this school goes way back,” the guide chuckled, gesturing towards the Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa. “We’re talking kings and queens kind of back!” The Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa, he explained, while physically impressive, wasn’t always housed in this grand edifice. The former traces its lineage to 1862 and the reign of King Luís, when the Escola Normal Primária de Lisboa was established. Finally, in 1919, they moved to the very building we stand before—a magnificent structure whose first stone was laid in 1916. The ceremony was graced by no less than President Bernardino Machado himself! But throughout it all, this building remained a steadfast beacon of education, eventually becoming the home of the Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa as we know it today.
