Founded in 1947 the Escola Secundária Rainha Dona Leonor boasts a rich history. Initially a girls-only school it was located in the Rua da Junqueira. It occupied the former Palácio da Ribeira. Later the Escola Secundária Rainha D Amália would use the same building.
The current building in Alvalade’s São João de Brito parish is a different story. Architect Augusto Brandão designed it. It opened in 1961. The building underwent significant renovations in 2011. Atelier dos Remédios led this project. The renovation earned the school the prestigious Valmor and Municipal Architecture Prize.
The school’s namesake Queen Leonor of Lancaster deserves mention. Born in Beja on February 2 1458 she was an Infanta of Portugal. She married King John II becoming Queen Consort from 1481 to 1495. She died in Lisbon on November 17 1525. The school’s dedication to her reflects a commitment to education and female empowerment.
