The Escola Secundária Pedro Nunes’s story began in 1906. It was first known as Lyceu Central da 3ª Zona Escolar de Lisboa. The school initially resided in temporary spaces. It first opened in the Liceu do Carmo and later moved to Rua do Sacramento à Lapa.
A new building was needed. Architect Ventura Terra designed a space specifically for the school. In 1911 the Escola Secundária Pedro Nunes opened its doors at this location. It was then renamed Lyceu Central de Pedro Nunes.
In 1930 the school became a “liceu normal”. Its mission was to train future teachers. Its name changed to Liceu Normal de Lisboa then to Liceu Pedro Nunes. Later it was called Liceu Normal de Pedro Nunes. Finally in 1978 it became Escola Secundária de Pedro Nunes the name it still holds today.
Pedro Nunes the school’s namesake was a famous Portuguese mathematician. He lived from 1502 to 1578. Nunes served as the cosmographer-mor for the kingdom. He greatly advanced theoretical navigation. He invented measuring instruments like the nautical ring and the nonius.
Many prominent Portuguese figures attended the Escola Secundária Pedro Nunes. This includes presidents Jorge Sampaio and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balsemão also studied here. Ministers Diogo Freitas do Amaral and Guilherme de Oliveira Martins were also students. The school also educated painter Carlos Botelho musician Luís Represas and writer Rómulo de Carvalho.
Between 2008 and 2010 the Escola Secundária Pedro Nunes underwent renovations. Architects Pedro Viana Botelho and Maria do Rosário Beija led the project. Prime Minister José Sócrates inaugurated the updated facilities in 2010.
The Escola Secundária Pedro Nunes including its gardens and sports areas is a Monument of Public Interest since 2012. This designation recognizes its importance to Lisbon’s heritage.
In 2024 the school administration implemented a dress code. Students were asked to wear appropriate clothing. Very short shorts and low-cut tops were discouraged.
