Ernest Bevin Academy in Tooting London has a story. It began in 1971. Two schools Bec Grammar and Hillcroft Secondary Modern merged. The school was briefly called Bec-Hillcroft. Then it was renamed Ernest Bevin School. This honored Ernest Bevin a British labour leader and politician. In 1996 it became Ernest Bevin College. In 2023 it became Ernest Bevin Academy.
Initially the Inner London Education Authority oversaw the school. After 1988 the London Borough of Wandsworth took over. In 2000 Ernest Bevin College became a specialist sports college. Its academic success led to a second specialism. This was in Mathematics and Computing in 2004.
The academy has impressive sports facilities. A new Sports and Sixth Form Centre was built in 2005. Dame Kelly Holmes opened it in September 2007. It includes a swimming pool a fitness suite and a judo dojo.
Ernest Bevin Academy offers many sports. These include football rugby cricket and swimming. Students can also play athletics basketball and table tennis. The school won the U16 Boys Nationals Title in volleyball in 2008. Judo is a focus sport here. The Ernest Bevin Phoenix Judo Club is licensed by the British Judo Association.
Many notable people attended Ernest Bevin Academy. Sadiq Khan Mayor of London is an alumnus. Other alumni include actor Lennie James and boxer Joe Joyce. Mike Bowron former commissioner for City of London Police also attended. Ortis Deley a television presenter and radio DJ is also an alumnus.
