Whispers of history linger here in Ermlitz. This unassuming village is far more than meets the eye. Ermlitz nestled in the easternmost part of Schkopau boasts a rich past. It’s a story of three villages Oberthau Ruesben and Ermlitz itself. Oberthau the oldest can trace its roots back to 1246. Ruesben followed in 1267. Ermlitz itself didn’t appear on the map until 1428.
But Ermlitz’s story almost ended. Imagine this village swallowed by a massive brown coal mine. That was the fate awaiting Ermlitz until German reunification. The year 1997 loomed large a year of potential erasure. But the fall of the Berlin Wall changed everything.
Reunification saved Ermlitz. The planned relocation never happened. Instead the village saw a rebirth. A new residential area sprung up on the Wachtberg since 1994. The village is now home to 1695 people. That’s a testament to Ermlitz’s resilience.
Ermlitz’s coat of arms reflects its unique story. It’s adapted from the Von Bose family crest. This family built the impressive manor house in the second half of the 18th century. Carl Hieronymus von Bose oversaw its creation between 1718 and 1797.
The manor house wasn’t just a grand residence. It welcomed renowned guests. Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner once graced its halls. This was during the time of the Apel family who owned the estate. Under the communist regime in East Germany it served as a children’s home. Today the manor stands as a testament to Ermlitz’s musical past. It hosts concerts echoing the melodies of its illustrious visitors.
