Do you see the modest yet beautiful chapel before us? That is the Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer. This chapel quietly anchors the community of Villaverde in Fuerteventura. The houses of Villaverde are scattered generously. They spread to the left and right of the FV-101 road. This road connects La Oliva with Corralejo. The square before the Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer is the closest thing to a village center here.

Most houses have been lovingly restored. Some are rented as fincas to tourists seeking tranquility. Those staying one or two days find suitable options in local hotels. Several restaurants and bars cater to your culinary needs.

The Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer stands as a testament to traditional architecture. It adds a touch of charm to Fuerteventura.

Now I will tell you about the saint to whom this chapel is dedicated. Vincent Ferrer was a Valencian Dominican friar and preacher. He lived from 1350 to 1419. The Catholic Church honors him as a saint. People remember him as a missionary and logician. Legend says that Vincent’s father had a dream. In this dream, a Dominican friar foretold that his son would achieve worldwide fame. They say that Vincent’s mother felt no pain when she gave birth to him. He was named after Vincent Martyr. This was the patron saint of Valencia.

Vincent began his classical studies at eight. At fourteen he started studying theology and philosophy. At eighteen he entered the Dominican Order. He faced temptations urging him to leave. His parents even asked him to become a secular priest. Through prayer and penance, he overcame these trials.

For three years, he dedicated himself solely to reading Sacred Scripture. He committed it to memory. In 1379, Vincent was ordained a priest in Barcelona. Eventually, he earned a doctorate in theology.

Some say that Vincent Ferrer traveled extensively. He went to England, Scotland, Ireland, Aragon, and Castile. He also preached in France, Switzerland, and Italy. He converted many. Though likely only speaking Valencian, he purportedly had the gift of tongues. His preaching style was innovative. It incorporated a popular tone and rhetorical directness. This was blended into traditional sermon structure.

Interestingly, Vincent Ferrer played a role in a political crisis in Aragon. King Martin died without an heir in 1410. A committee chose the next king. Vincent represented Valencia. He voted for Ferdinand of Antequera. Ferdinand then became King of Aragon.

Vincent Ferrer died in Vannes, Brittany in 1419. He was buried in Vannes Cathedral. Today, the Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer in Villaverde may seem like a simple chapel. Yet it connects us to centuries of history. It reminds us of Saint Vincent Ferrer. He was a figure of faith, intellect, and influence.
