Gazing upon the Ermita de San Marcos Evangelista, one can almost hear the whispers of Tiscamanita’s past. This unassuming chapel, nestled in the heart of Fuerteventura, holds a history as rich and textured as the volcanic landscape surrounding it. The Ermita de San Marcos Evangelista wasn’t built by kings or conquerors. It was raised by the very hands of the villagers in the late 17th century, a testament to their faith and community spirit. Some villagers, like Luis Herrera, even bequeathed funds for its construction, their names etched in the annals of Tiscamanita’s history. A weathered inscription on the Ermita de San Marcos’s facade proudly proclaims its completion in 1699 by Pablo Sánchez de Carmona, a name that resonates with the architectural heritage of Betancuria. The Ermita de San Marcos has seen the ebb and flow of religious authority. It became part of the Tuineje Parish in 1792. Later, it served as the parish church of Tiscamanita from 1915 to 1985, a testament to the village’s burgeoning social and economic influence. Yet, throughout these transitions, the Ermita de San Marcos retained its humble charm. Its modest dimensions and simple design remained a constant, echoing the spirit of the villagers who first built it. The Ermita de San Marcos is a simple structure, a single nave covered with a three-sloped roof of tiles. Four flared windows, crafted from light-colored quarry stone, allow soft light to filter into the space. Two arched doorways, one on the south side and the other on the main facade, welcome worshippers. The main doorway, situated at the foot of the Ermita de San Marcos, features an intricately carved arch adorned with baquetón moldings. The Ermita de San Marcos is more than just a building.
