Isn’t it fascinating how a small chapel can hold so much history? Right here, in front of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, we’re standing before a testament to faith and maritime tradition.

This small church in El Cotillo was erected in the late 17th century. It was strategically placed away from the nearest houses in El Roque. This made it easily visible from both El Roque and El Cotillo. It served as a landmark for boats and fishermen navigating these waters.

Sebastián Trujillo Ruiz, a Sergeant Major, founded the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje. On June 7, 1680, the chapel was erected on a farm owned by Sebastián. He had previously purchased the land from Bartolomé González Calero.

Sebastián wanted to ensure masses and celebrations would continue every year. So, he left a lifetime annuity for these activities. This included profits from the farm, house, cistern, and mill.

The architecture of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje is simple yet striking. The main facade features a doorway framed in black stonework. It is finished with a semicircular arch. On the upper right side, you’ll notice a belfry. It has a single opening for a bell. In front of the main door stands a Calvary with a wooden cross.

Inside, the roof is covered with a two-pitched coffered ceiling. It features an alfarje decorated with geometric motifs. Wooden tie rods connect the side walls.

But the true heart of this chapel lies in its connection to the sea. The Virgin of the Good Voyage is deeply linked to the protection of local sailors. Their lives at sea were always fraught with danger. Sailors would pray to the Virgin. They sought protection during their long voyages.

Today, the tradition continues during the festivals of El Cotillo. The Virgen Marinera del Buen Viaje participates in maritime processions. Boats are adorned. People remember those who died at sea. Every two years, there is a night procession. The Virgin is carried from the Ermita to El Roque. The entire route is lit with torches.

Visiting during the local festivals is a special experience. The festivals take place on the Sunday following the Ascension. You can witness the procession of the Virgin from the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje to El Roque. It is a beautiful, torch-lit event.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje is more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of El Cotillo. It represents the faith, the sea, and the community. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of belief and tradition. Take a moment to appreciate the history and devotion within these walls.
