Did you know that the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced in El Time, Fuerteventura stands as a testament to centuries of faith? This isn’t just any hermitage. It is a place where history and devotion intertwine.

Welcome to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced. This charming chapel is located in the picturesque village of El Time. It is part of Puerto del Rosario. This sacred space dates back to the 17th century. It reflects the deep religious spirit of the island’s inhabitants.

Let’s step back in time to 1670. Don Manuel de la Trinidad, a local resident of El Time, sought permission to build this hermitage. He pledged to fund it and ensure its annual festivities. By 1674, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced was complete. It was ready to serve as a place of worship.

Notice the architecture. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced features a single nave. The presbytery stands slightly elevated. A hipped roof covers the structure. The sacristy adjoins the chancel wall. It has a window facing west.

There are two entrances to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced. The south wall entrance has a semicircular arch. It is framed by light stonework. The main facade also features a semicircular arch. But this one is made of darker stone.

High above the main facade, you will see the espadaña. It’s crafted from red stone. A single opening holds the bell. A wooden cross crowns the structure. An inscription reveals the year 1909. This likely marks the installation of the bell. Don Juan Reyes Barrios and his son Agustín acquired it after returning from Cuba.

Inside the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, there is an image of Our Lady of Mercy. It was acquired between 1724 and 1741 during Don Gregorio de Bares’ stewardship. This replaced the original image donated by Don Manuel de la Trinidad. The Virgin of Mercy is deeply revered in the Canary Islands. People invoke her protection against pirate attacks.

In May 2007, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura completed restoration work on the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced. The focus was on repairing the roof. Tropical storm Delta had significantly damaged it in 2005.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is more than a place of worship. It is a symbol of El Time’s historical and cultural heritage. It embodies the faith and dedication of its people throughout the centuries. As you stand here, consider the countless prayers and hopes. These have echoed within these walls. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Merced stands as a lasting legacy. It shows the enduring spirit of Fuerteventura.
