High atop Cruz Loma, the Ermita Católica de La Dolorosa stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The Ermita Católica de La Dolorosa isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of hope, perched at a breathtaking 4,100 meters above sea level. Inaugurated in 2008 by Archbishop Rafael Vega Chiriboga, the Ermita Católica de La Dolorosa holds the distinction of being one of the highest chapels in the world. Imagine ascending to this sacred site, the air thinning with each step, the city of Quito sprawling below like a vibrant tapestry. Inside the Ermita Católica de La Dolorosa, a stunning mosaic of La Dolorosa greets you. Crafted from granite, marble, and a kaleidoscope of colored stones, this masterpiece was created in the Al Bagdadhi workshop of Damascus, Syria. It was commissioned by the alumni class of 1983 from Colegio San Gabriel, adding another layer of meaning to this already significant location. The Ermita Católica de La Dolorosa is more than just a chapel. It’s a testament to the devotion of the Ecuadorian people, a symbol of their enduring faith. The chapel is close to Rucu Pichincha and can be reached via TeleferiQo, Quito’s cable car.
